This isn’t going to be very interesting to most of my followers, but I’ve succeeded in installing OS X Leopard onto the Dell Inspiron 1300 pictured above, and that is something I’m quite proud of :D
It took 2 computers, 4 operating systems across 4 hard drives and nearly a month of work, and I now have an almost perfectly working Leopard install, which, on none Apple hardware, is supposed to be impossible :D
Some things obviously don’t work as they should, such as DVD player, that crashes when attempting to play DVD’s, and System Profiler crashes when attempting to read hardware information, and the laptop speakers still play sound when the headphones are plugged in but I already know what hardware is installed in this computer anyway, and I use VLC Player for DVD’s and so on, so that’s not a problem either, and as for the speakers, well, I never use them anyway, so I might just unplug them from the motherboard, or take them out completely until I find a solution to that problem :D
But having said all of that, it’s fast, and I mean, fucking FAST. From cold boot it takes 27 seconds to reach the desktop, and is usable the minute you get there, whereas Windows XP takes about 50 seconds to reach the same stage on the same laptop, and it shuts down in just a touch over 6 seconds, whereas Windows would still be logging off at that point, iTunes loads in just over a second, and we all know how much of a hog that is, Firefox 7 loads in about 3 seconds, it took about 10 in Windows XP, and overall, just feels snappier and more responsive.
I’m still testing atm, but as it stands, OS X is going to be my favourite operating system for yet another computer. I’m slowly converting to Mac, I still have the same feelings about Apple and how they run their business, but I have got to hand it to them, OS X Leopard and Snow Leopard are brilliant, I’m just sorry to say that affording a real Mac is out of the question for cash strapped little old me at the moment, but when I do have enough money, I’ll definitely be buying one. :D
And talk about bragging rights when you switch on a cheap, second or third hand, 6 year old Dell and OS X loads up as though it belongs there :D
